Family physicians statewide warn that the 10.6% Medicare cut in payments to doctors taking effect July 1 puts California's seniors' health on the line. "The Senate's refusal to block the cuts yesterday sounded the death knell for access to physicians for thousands of people in our state," said Jeffrey Luther, MD, president of the 7,000-member California Academy of Family Physicians.
"Family physicians are extremely disappointed and outraged by the U.S. Senate's failure to stop the 10.6 percent cut in Medicare physician reimbursement rates that will take effect July 1. Medicare as we know it will now go from serious condition to life support. Patients here in Illinois and around the country age 65 and older who rely on Medicare will face longer waits and may have to find a new doctor to care for them.
