Reacting to the draft legislative programme announced by Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Paul Cann, Director of Policy at Help the Aged, says: "If the Prime Minister is serious about creating a 'fairer' Britain, he must go back to basics and ensure people have equal rights. It almost goes without saying that this should include older people - the fastest growing population group.
I read something very interesting the other night that I wanted to share with you. Adults are different than children. No, wait, there's more! Adults learn differently than children. Photo: Jason Taellious Parents send their children to school to acquire the basic learning in order to function in society: language skills, arithmetic, spelling, etc. Things change as you get older. Adults don't have to go to school unless it is something they choose. The entire process of adult learning varies tremendously compared to what is experienced by children. It begins with motivation: adults seek more education in order to create change (involving skills, behavior, knowledge level, even attitudes). Previous experiences and the personal level of engagement also shape adult learning.

This morning on my way to work, I was driving next to a big SUV. In the front passenger seat...standing...was a little girl with ribbon in her hair; about two years old. The mother was busy talking to her and not paying much attention to the traffic around her. About the time I was trying to get behind her to jot down the license plate number, she turned off. My intention was to call the local police to see if they could nail that irresponsible woman (the mother?) with a big, fat ticket. I spend a great deal of time in traffic and I see unrestrained kids quite often jumping around in the back seat. Or, I will see part of a little tiny head sitting in the front. The only more dangerous place for a child would be sitting on the top rack.

During the last few months I have been sharing the experience of my husband's total knee replacement . We are pleased to say he is just about finished with his therapy and ready to go back to work. His surgeon says he has a "state of the art" knee. My husband spent some time in a painful lull and then bounded forward with improvements. He can now go without pain meds. He walks without a cane and no longer limps. He walks longer distances than he did before but still finds some limitations when he tries to walk too far or push too hard. (Keeping it real).
