Geriatric Care Associated With Safer Prescribing Among Elderly Vets

For many elderly Americans, the day begins and ends with a dose of one or more prescription medications. However, some patients could be less likely to receive the wrong dosage or type of medications than others are, according to a recent study of more than 800,000 U.S. seniors. "Patients who received care from a geriatrician tend to have better prescribing and they tend not to receive drugs that are inappropriate for older patients," said Mary Jo Pugh, Ph.D.

Review Looks At Latest Birth Control Options

With many women still searching for the perfect birth control method, a systematic review analyzes a host of studies comparing the contraceptive skin patch or vaginal ring to the pill. Although perfection remains elusive and choices are equally effective, the review authors were able to pinpoint some preferences. "Basically, all of these methods were similar in preventing pregnancy," said lead investigator Laureen Lopez, Ph.D.

Sixth Swan Tests Positive For H5N1 Bird Flu Virus Strain, England

A sixth mute swan, which was collected on January 21st as part of wild bird surveillance in Dorset, England, has tested positive for H5N1, the virulent bird flu virus strain, reports Defra (Department for the Environment Food and Rural Affairs). Defra added that this sixth confirmation is not a surprise. Defra informs that the area is currently undergoing an "enhanced surveillance" of wild birds.
