Bulgaria: Sixty Four Per Cent Of Pregnant Women Carry On Smoking

Research in Bulgaria has found that more than half of pregnant women in Bulgaria continue to smoke. Although the pregnant women were aware of the harm inflicted on their child, 64 per cent failed to give up, with many claiming to cut down the number of cigarettes they smoke instead of completely stopping. The research was carried out among female smokers between 22 and 53 years of age. Lack of will was the main factor that prevented pregnant women from giving up.

Hungary: Health Minister Says Smoking Ban Is A Top Priority

Hungary, which tops the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development's list for deaths from lung cancer, plans to join the group of countries which have banned smoking in closed public places. In a press conference in Budapest, the Health Minister, Agnes Horvath said that the Health Ministry is drafting a smoking ban similar to clampdowns in Ireland and France.Hungary has 60.5 deaths from lung cancer per 100,000 citizens, compared with an OECD average of 37.

Medical scientists in Egypt have found that shisha smoking poses a greater health threat than cigarettes, contrary to popular belief among water pipe smokers. The scientists built a device to test the theory that smoking shishas, also known as hookahs, is safer as smoke is filtered through water before being inhaled. The medics found that shisha smokers inhale more nicotine than cigarette smokers.

Russia Combats Smoking Culture

The Russian government is taking steps to address smoking by banning all tobacco advertising. Hundreds of thousands of people in Russia die each year from smoking-related illnesses; 60 percent of men and 30 percent of women smoke. Experts say the ban is just the first step in changing the habits of millions. Cigarettes in Russia are cheap and most restaurants are smoker-friendly and public places usually have a place to smoke.

Workers Get Help To Give Up Cigarettes

Council staff trying to stop smoking are being given support from their employer, Wear Valley District Council. Employees are being offered fortnightly stop-smoking sessions to give staff the help and information they need to quit. Andrew Hall, a training officer with the council who gave up cigarettes 12 years ago, set up the group last week. So far, five people have signed up.

Indonesian Woman Dies Of Bird Flu, Total Is 95

A 32-year old woman who had caught the deadly strain of H5N1 bird flu in her home town near Jakarta died last Thursday, bringing to 95 the total number of people who have died from the virus in Indonesia, the highest so far of any country. A health ministry official confirmed the death was due to bird flu today, Monday 14th January, said a Reuters news report from the capital, Jakarta.
